Our Philosophy

The vision of Veritas is to be family, pursuing truth with honest expression as we follow Jesus into the margins.

At Veritas a huge part of our vision is to live like an extended family, where children, teenagers, young adults, adults, and older adults develop relationships with one another, mentor and disciple one another in following Jesus.

We believe that, just like a biological family, we aren’t to be segregated into age-based silos, but to be part of a multi-generational church family.

What does Family Ministry look like?

At Veritas, our philosophy of family ministry means that we don’t have a formal children’s church or Sunday school program.

School-aged children (6 and above): We encourage school-aged children and teenagers to be a part of the worship gathering, including participating in the discussion time, as well as using their gifts to build up the body (running media, special music, etc.). Welcome bags are available for each child, which contain items such as coloring books, crayons, stamps, and play dough.

Children under 6: In our nursery area, children under 6 are supervised by a nursery volunteer. Most of our nursery volunteers are parents of children within the church and have their clearances. Parents are also welcome to stay with their children in the nursery area.

Child dedication: As part of the Church of the Brethren, we believe that baptism is reserved for believers who have made a confession of faith that indicates a willingness to take on both the joy and the responsibility of living Jesus’ teachings. For babies and children who are not yet able to make a personal decision involving said responsibility, we offer child dedication.

Expectations for Children and Youth

  1. Our nursery and play area is for children 0-6 and parents, older siblings, or care-givers of the children.

  2. Children over 6 should be participating in the service with their family as much as possible.

  3. Children may take a welcome bag to use during the worship gathering and then return the bag to the welcome area at the end.

  4. We expect children and youth to not be on their devices (phones, tablets, etc.) during the worship gathering unless under the direction of their parents.

  5. No children or youth should be in the closet.

  6. We would love for children and youth to be involved in the worship gathering in various ways, including but not limited to: running media, giving announcements, participating in the discussion time, singing, sharing testimonies, giving readings.
